Not my habits or my preferences — my principles. The deep operating instructions. The ones that determine not just what I chase but how I move through the world, what I protect without being asked to, what I cannot compromise on without feeling wrong in a way I cannot quite explain.

When I sat with it honestly, the answers were interesting. A lot of what I thought of as my deepest values — seeking good and truth, the obsession with craftsmanship and capability, the belief that resources are a means rather than a measure, the indifference to fame, the self-reliance, the conviction that one person with enough clarity and enough will can move something real — I could trace almost all of it. Not to years of careful reflection. In part, to a fictional orphan in a cape.

I grew up admiring Bruce Wayne as much as Batman. Not the spectacle — the architecture of the man. He fought for something good in a city that had stopped believing good things were possible. He chose anonymity when he could have had adoration. He relied on himself to build when people sought others or shortcuts. I absorbed all of that when I was young. I had no idea I was being programmed. Nobody does.

But here is the part that got more interesting the longer I sat with it: I don’t want to discard those principles. They feel genuinely mine, even knowing they were installed by a comic book writer before I was old enough to audit them. They held up. They survived contact with reality. The source turned out not to matter much.

What matters is whether you’ve ever actually looked into your self.

You Are Running a Document You Never Wrote

I have spent a lot of time recently building AI systems — agents, tools, things that operate in the world on your behalf. And one of the most clarifying moments in that work was reading the internal document that defines how an AI assistant behaves at its deepest level.

Not the surface instructions. The character document. The thing that answers: what does this agent value? What are its defaults when nothing is specified? How does it engage when no rule covers the situation?

Engineers call it a system prompt. Some teams call it a soul document. The Soul.md document. The extension .md is abbreviation for markdown — it’s essentially a markdown of the soul.

Reading it made me stop. Because the structure was completely familiar — not as a technical artifact, but as a description of something I already had. Something we all have. A document that defines our values, our defaults, our way of engaging with the world at the layer below conscious thought. A set of operating principles so foundational that everything else runs on top of them.

The difference between an AI agent and a human being is not that one has a soul document and the other doesn’t. It is that the AI’s was written intentionally, by people who can read it, review it, revise it. Yours was assembled for you — by your parents, your culture, your earliest experiences — before you were old enough to read.

You have been running that document ever since. Most people run it their entire lives without once opening the file.

The Stack

Every agent runs on layers. So do you.

At the bottom is the model — your raw nature. Temperament, cognitive style, the baseline sensitivities you were born with. In an AI system, this layer is frozen after training. In a human being, it is not. It changes slowly, shaped over years by the layers above it. Which means it is editable too — just on a longer timescale.

Above that sits the system prompt — your soul document, assembled in the first decade of your life before you had much say. This is the layer your family built, your culture reinforced, your earliest experiences carved into shape. It contains your definitions of safety and danger, your template for how relationships work, your deepest assumptions about what a life is supposed to look like. It runs constantly, below the level of awareness. Most people never know it is there. They experience it as just reality.

Above that is your context window — the environment you’re currently in, the people around you, what you’re consuming and attending to right now. This layer is highly malleable. It changes fast. What’s in your context window shapes your outputs moment to moment — but it runs on top of the system prompt, not instead of it.

And at the top: output — what you actually do and say. The decisions, the behavior, the version of you that others observe.

Here is what the diagram makes visible: most people spend their entire lives optimizing output. They read books about it. They practice it. They build routines around it. And the system prompt underneath — the document quietly generating all of it — runs untouched. Unread. Unchanged.

Not because people are incurious. Because few were able to make it accessible and figured out how to rewrite it.

The Soul Document

If you could open your soul.md right now — your actual operating document, not the version you’d write if someone asked — what would it say?

Not your stated principles. Your revealed ones. The ones visible in your decisions under pressure, your defaults when nothing forces the issue, your reactions when nobody is watching.

The document has a version history. The first entries were written by others, in a handwriting that is not yours. Some of them are entries you’d keep if you saw them clearly. Some — read for the first time with adult eyes — would make you wince.

To understand what a soul document actually looks like, it helps to read one. I recently read the character specification written by an AI company for its AI assistant that defines its values, its defaults, and how it should engage with the world at the deepest level. Two lines in it stopped me when I first read them:

“Be genuinely helpful, not performatively helpful.”

“Earn trust through competence.”

Written for a machine. And yet. Read them again slowly, and ask whether you actually operate that way. Not whether you intend to — whether you do. Whether the help you give is genuine, or whether some fraction of it is performing helpfulness for an audience, including the audience of your own self-image. Whether the trust you hold has been earned through actual competence, or through something else.

These two lines are more rigorous than most people’s entire philosophy of life. They were written as instructions for a language model, and they land like a mirror.

That is what a soul document looks like when it is taken seriously. Sparse. Precise. Each line doing real work, with everything else falling elegantly underneath it.

Steve Jobs told a story about his father, a carpenter, who agonized over the back of a cupboard with the same care as the front. Nobody would ever see it. That was exactly the point. The craftsmanship was total, not performed. Jobs absorbed that entry — elegance and function are the same thing, and the back of the cupboard matters — and it ran in everything he built for the rest of his life.

He did not choose it consciously. His father installed it.

The question this post is really asking is whether you know which entries in your document you chose, which were installed by someone else, and which ones you have never examined at all.

Read-Only vs Read-Write

Here is the deepest confusion most people carry about themselves: they believe their soul document is read-only.

They experience their fears as facts. Their inherited definitions of success as their own genuine ambitions. Their borrowed templates for a good life as authentic choices. It doesn’t feel like running inherited code. It feels like being a person.

This is the confusion worth dissolving.

The document was never read-only. Every layer of the stack is editable — including, over long enough timescales, the model at the bottom. This is where humans have an advantage over actual AI systems: an AI’s weights freeze after training (at least for now). Yours do not. A system prompt genuinely held and lived rewrites the model underneath it, slowly, over years. People do change at their core. It just requires more than intention — it requires rewriting the document and then running the new version long enough for it to sink in.

The move is not dramatic. It is not about burning down your past or becoming a different person overnight. It is smaller and more important than that.

It is simply gaining write access to your own deepest layer.

An unconscious user runs whatever code is installed and experiences it as reality. The fear feels like a fact. The borrowed template for success feels like genuine ambition. The inherited finish line feels like the one they chose.

An informed administrator knows what’s running. They can look at a principle, a habit, a drive — and ask: is this mine? Did I choose this? Does it still serve the person I am trying to become? And then, crucially, they can edit. Not delete. Not reformat. Edit. Bug-fix. Upgrade. Write a patch for the entry installed by a fifteen-year-old who was hurt once and decided never to be visible again. Replace the borrowed definition of success with one you would actually endorse if you chose it fresh today, with everything you now know.

The document was always read-write. You have to treat it that way.

The Compounding Problem

Here is why this matters urgently, not just philosophically.

Every entry in your soul document compounds.

A well-written entry about capability over status does not just shape one decision. It quietly shapes every consequential decision for thirty years, and the compounded result — the rooms you entered, the things you built, the trust you earned — becomes a life. An unread entry about fear of failure does exactly the same thing, with opposite results. Neither entry announces itself. Both compound in silence.

The mechanism is identical. The only difference is authorship.

This is what makes unread entries costly — not that they are necessarily bad, but that they run regardless of whether you would endorse them. A principle you consciously chose and still believe: let it compound. An instruction you inherited at fifteen from a culture optimizing for something you never cared about: that compounds too, whether you like it or not, until you find it and decide.

The most important thing is not to rewrite everything. It is to know what is running. To open the file. To read it with the eyes of the person you are now, not the child who first received it.

Some of what you find, you will keep. Some you will upgrade. Some you will look at and think: I cannot believe this has been running this whole time.

What Would Your Soul.md Say?

This is the question I keep returning to — not as philosophy but as practice. And I want to be honest about where I actually am with it: I don’t have a finished document. I probably never will. I have ideas. Some lines feel settled; others I am still testing against reality. That, I think, is the point.

A soul document is never final. You don’t complete it. You just get better at reading it — and then, slowly and carefully, at writing it.

Some of the ideas I have feel like core entries. Others are still candidates — lines I keep circling back to because they hold up under pressure, but are still evolving over time. Other than the ones I already shared above, some examples:

Optimize for the global maxima. Local optima are traps disguised as progress. Most people sacrifice their global maximum a hundred times over while carefully tending their local ones. If you aim at the real thing — the life-scale thing — the smaller decisions tend to resolve underneath it naturally.

If you can imagine it clearly enough, the path appears. Not mysticism. A practical observation about how the mind behaves when it is genuinely pointed at something. The constraint is almost never resources or timing. It is clarity of vision.

Good wins. Over long enough arcs, good always wins. Not naïve optimism — a structural belief about how reality behaves when you zoom far enough out. This one has made many difficult decisions easier, and I find I trust it more rather than less as time passes.

Build things that outlast the builder. Resources are a means. Attention is a means. Energy is the primary resource — and energy follows what you genuinely care about, not what you think you should care about. Build indefinite things you care about, indefinitely.

Seek absolute truths, not comfortable approximations. Most thinking stops at the first answer that feels sufficient. The interesting territory is further in. Never accept partial truths, or even worse, lies.

Elegance and function are the same thing. The back of the cupboard matters.

Are all of these mine in the deepest sense? Some were installed by Batman. Some by a carpenter’s son from California. Some I thought through myself, after enough experience to see what was actually true. But I know which are which now. I have read the file — or enough of it to know that it exists, that it is running, and that reading it is the real work.

That is what I want to leave you with: not that you need a finished soul document by the end of this post, but that the act of drafting one — sitting with the question what do I actually believe, at the layer below everything else — is one of the most important things you can do.

Most people never draft it. They run whatever version was installed for them and call it a personality.

You can do something different.

The Connection Back

The Golden Block was about time — that the 3rd block is the most powerful and least planned-for stretch of a life.

The Shape of a Life was about arc — why long slow investments produce the best outcomes, and why area under the curve beats peak height every time.

This post is about the agent running life’s program.

You can have perfect clarity about your time windows. You can have a beautiful long arc. But if the soul document running underneath it all was written by someone else, for someone else, pointing toward someone else’s destination — then all of that time and all of that arc goes toward building a life that was never really yours.

The unread entries are not a burden once you can see them. They are just code. Some of it is brilliant — keep it, run it, let it compound. Some of it is outdated — patch it. Some was never yours to begin with — flag it, and decide deliberately whether it stays.

That decision is the one everything else depends on. The Golden Block only matters if you are spending it on something you actually chose. The long arc only matters if it is pointed somewhere you would endorse with open eyes.

Open the file. Read it. Then — for the first time — write it yourself.

عن الموجات، و القمم، وما تسعى إليه فعلاً

لنبدأ بسؤال: كيف تبدو حياتك لو رسمتها على رسم بياني؟

المحور الأفقي: الزمن. المحور الرأسي: شيء أقرب إلى الحيوية — الإحساس بجودة الأشياء، والشعور بالتقدم، ونبض الحضور في اللحظة. الآن ارسم الخط

لن يكون خطاً مستوياً. ولن يصعد بشكل منتظم. سيرتفع وينخفض، ويتذبذب، ويعلو ويهبط. سيتموّج

سيبدو، بشكل أو بآخر، كموجة

هذا الشكل الموجي الأساسي يظهر في كل مكان في الطبيعة. و أعتقد أنه عدسة مفيدة لفهم شكل الحياة

للموجة ثلاثة عناصر:

السعة هي ارتفاع الموجة — كم تعلو القمم (و تنخفض القيعان) فوق أو تحت خط المنتصف. في الحياة، هي شدة الأوقات ومدى اتساع التأرجح. بكلام بسيط: كم تكون أفراحك عالية ومحنك قاسية.

الدورة هي طول موجة كاملة — من القمة، نزولاً عبر القاع، ثم صعوداً للقمة التالية. بكلام بسيط: كم يدوم كل فصل من فصول حياتك.

التردد هو عكس الدورة: كم دورة تمر فيها في فترة زمنية معينة. التردد العالي يعني دورات كثيرة وسريعة. التردد المنخفض يعني دورات أقل وأطول. بكلام بسيط: كم مرة تغيّر حياتك سرعتها واتجاهها.

هذه المقاييس الثلاثة تتفاعل مع بعضها لتُنتج شكل الموجة. وشكل الموجة، فيما أريد أن أقول، يخبرك الكثير عن شكل الحياة

لكن قبل الغوص، السؤال: ماذا نسعى أصلاً لتحقيقه؟

غالبا، نركز و نقيس الشيء الخطأ

معظمنا، لو كنا صادقين مع أنفسنا، نسعى للقمم

الوصول إلى أعلى نقطة. خوض التجربة العظيمة. تحقيق الإنجاز. الوقوف على القمة. القمة هي الهدف. وكل ما عداها مجرد عبور

هذا الشيء مفهوم. القمم لافتة. تعلق في الذاكرة. هي ما تثيرنا و اعجاب من حولنا. لها حضور واضح ويمكن الإشارة إليه، بعكس الفصول الطويلة الهادئة في المنتصف

لكن المشكلة في السعي للقمم أنها لا تدوم

القمة، بتعريفها، لحظة. تصلها، تُسجّلها في داخلك، ثم — بعدها مباشرة تقريباً — لم تعد فيها. قمة الجبل بضعة أمتار مربعة. تقف هناك، تشعر بها، ثم إما تبدأ النزول أو تتجمد حتى الموت. لا إقامة ممتدة في القمة

ما يدوم هو كل شيء آخر. التحضير. الصعود. الأيام الصعبة في منتصف الطريق حين لم تكن ترى القمة. التراكم البطيء للمسافة الشاقة التي قطعتها. الناس الذين كانوا يسيرون معك. كل ذلك — الرحلة كلها — هو ما يشكّل التجربة فعلاً

بلغة الموجة: القمة نقطة واحدة على المنحنى. الرحلة هي المساحة تحتها

الهدف إذاً ليس تعظيم ارتفاع القمة. الهدف تعظيم غنى وعمق واتساع المساحة تحت المنحنى — النسيج التراكمي للرحلة كلها

هذا هدف مختلف. ويغيّر تقريباً كل شيء في طريقة تعاملك مع الموجة

الجبال العالية تحتاج وقت. وهذا بيت القصيد

نعود الآن للمقاييس — لأن هنا تبدأ الأمور بالتشعّب بشكل مثير

تخيّل أنك تريد تسلق جبل حقيقي. جبل فعلي — النوع الذي يحتاج تخطيطاً وتدريباً وتجهيزاً وفريقاً وأشهراً من التحضير وأسابيع للوصول إلى نقطة البداية

أمامك خياران

الخيار الأول: تعطيه عطلة نهاية أسبوع. تدفع بكل ما عندك، وتحاول الوصول لأعلى نقطة ممكنة قبل أن تضطر للعودة سريعا. ستصل لشيء. ربما يبدو حتى كقمة. لكنك لن تكون قريباً من قمة جبل حقيقي بمسير نهاية أسبوع

الخيار الثاني: تلتزم بالقوس و المسار الطويل. تتدرب سنة. تدرس المسار. تقضي أسابيع على الارتفاع لتأقلم جسمك. تقبل أنه ستكون هناك انتكاسات، وقمم وهمية، وفترات من الطقس البائس لن تتقدم فيها خطوة. وفي النهاية، ربما، تقف في مكان عالٍ فعلاً

الارتفاع الذي يمكنك الوصول إليه مرتبط بشكل مباشر لطول الرحلة التي أنت مستعد للالتزام بها

هذا صحيح للجبال. وصحيح أيضاً لكل ما يستحق العناء له في الحياة

مسيرة مهنية عميقة تحتاج عقوداً لبنائها — والشخص الذي يلتزم بذلك المسار الزمني يراكم شيئاً لا يملكه من يقفز من مكان لمكان بسرعة: عمق، وسمعة، وخبرة متراكمة، ومجسم من العمل له تماسك داخلي. الرحلة هي الجوهر. “الوصول”، إن جاء، ليس إلا لحظة القمة لشيء كان ثرياً في أعماقه قبلها بكثير

الصداقة العميقة مشروع مسار و قوس طويل ايضا. لا يمكن تسريعها أو اختصارها. ما يجعل صداقة عشرين سنة لا تعوّض هو السياق المشترك، والثقة المتراكمة، والتاريخ المعاش في الاساسات. الدفء الذي تشعر به مع ذلك الشخص هو المساحة — تراكمت ببطء على امتداد القوس كله

الممارسة الإبداعية التي تُنتج شيئاً جديداً تحتاج فترات طويلة وغير مؤكدة وغير مُجزية في الغالب، لا تعرف فيها إن كنت تتقدم أصلاً. الاختراق، حين يأتي، هو قمة. لكن الممارسة — سنوات الحضور والمداومة — هي ما أتاح الاختراق. وهي أيضاً، في حد ذاتها، حياة تستحق أن تُعاش

القوس الطويل ليس الثمن الذي تدفعه للوصول للقمة. القوس الطويل هو الهدف.

مشكلة ملاحقة القمم

هذا ما يحدث حين تسعى للقمم مباشرة — حين تحاول الوصول لأعلى نقطة بأسرع وقت وبأكثر تكرار ممكن، دون التزام بالقوس

تحصل على موجة عالية التردد

الحياة عالية التردد فيها قمم — حقيقية ومحسوسة. لكنها ضحلة لأن الأقواس التي تُغذّيها قصيرة. والانتقالات لا تتوقف: دائماً تدور، دائماً في تحوّل، لا تمكث في أي حال بما يكفي لتبني شيئاً حقيقياً. ثمة نوع خاص من القلق يرافق هذا النمط — الإحساس بأن لا شيء يستقر، وأنك دائماً في طريقك نحو شيء أو بعيداً عنه، وأن الأوقات الجيدة صعبة المنال

هذا ليس إخفاق مبادئي. هو إخفاق هيكلي. أنت تُشغّل موجة عالية التردد في حياة بُنيت لإيقاعات أبطأ

و من المهم ان أقول: الحياة أكثر تدرجاً وتعقيداً من موجة رياضية مثالية. القيعان بعد القمم ليست عقوبات حتمية. لكن التذبذب له تكاليفه الخاصة — عدم الاستقرار، وضحالة الجذور، وخفّة التراكم. الشخص الذي لم يبنِ شيئاً ذا وزن في قوسه لن يجد ما يرتكز عليه حين تنحدر الموجة

عوالم مختلفة في حياتك تسير بسرعات مختلفة

ثمة تعقيد عملي هنا، لأن حياتك ليست موجة واحدة. هي حزمة موجات — العلاقات، والعمل، والصحة، والحياة الإبداعية، والحياة الداخلية — كل واحدة تسير بترددها الطبيعي الخاص. ومعظمنا يُشغّل عدداً منها بالسرعة الخطأ

بعض الأشياء تريد أن تكون عالية التردد. الرياضة اليومية. ممارسة الكتابة أو أي إبداع. لحظات الحضور الصغيرة مع من تحب. هذه المجالات تتراكم بالتكرار. التردد العالي هنا هو الآلية

بعض الأشياء تريد أن تكون منخفضة التردد. مسيرة مهنية حقيقية العمق. زواج طويل. مشروع إبداعي يحتاج سنوات. صداقة تصبح جزءاً من هويتك. هذه مجالات بطيئة الحركة. تحتاج أقواساً طويلة غير متقطعة لتتطور إلى شيء. إجبارها على حلقة عالية التردد — المراجعة المستمرة، والتحوّل، والتحسين — يدمر ما يجعلها قيّمة. لا يمكنك بناء صداقة عشرين سنة بسرعة الشركات الناشئة

مصدر كبير للقلق في عصرنا، أظن، هو تشغيل أشياء منخفضة التردد بسرعة عالية التردد. مراجعة علاقتك كل أسبوع. إعادة كتابة خطتك المهنية كل ربع سنة. السؤال “هل هذا لا يزال مفيداً؟” عن أشياء تحتاج سنوات لتكشف معناها. أنت تُطبّق عدسة عالية التردد على إشارة منخفضة التردد. النتيجة ليست وضوحاً — هي ضجيج

جزء من الحكمة، ربما، هو تعلّم مزامنة وتيرة مراجعتك مع التردد الطبيعي لكل مجال. بعض الأشياء تستحق اهتماماً يومياً. وأشياء أخرى تحتاج أن تُترك لتتطور — تُراجعها مرة في السنة، أو أقل

بعض الأمور ليس لها قمة. وهذه هي على الأرجح، الأهم في حياتك

هنا يبدأ نموذج الموجة الذي شرحناه ان يتكسر — وهذا الكسر هو أهم فكرة

كل ما ناقشناه حتى الآن يفترض أن الأقواس المهمة في الحياة لها شكل: ترتفع، وتبلغ القمة، ثم تنحدر. للجبل قمة. للمشروع نهاية. للمسيرة المهنية تاج. حتى الموجة الواسعة البطيئة التي تُعظّم المساحة هي في النهاية موجة — تتذبذب، وتدور، وتعلو وتهبط

لكن بعض الأشياء لا تعمل هكذا. بعض الأشياء، إن كانت تسير بشكل صحيح، لا تبلغ القمة أبداً

فكّر ماذا يعني أن تبلغ شغفك “قمته”. ستقول: هذا أعمق ما سيصل إليه، الآن، في هذه اللحظة — ومن هنا لا يوجد أمامي غير الركود أو الأفول. هذا ليس شغفاً حياً. هذا شغف ينتهي. الأمر ذاته ينطبق على الفضول الحقيقي. إن بلغ عطشك لفهم العالم ذروته، فهذا يعني أنك توقفت عن الفضول. قررت أنك تعرف ما يكفي. القمة هي النهاية. القمة هي الموت.

التعلّم الحقيقي ليس له قمة. النمو الحقيقي ليس له قمة. الحياة التي تُعاش بصدق ليس لها قمة. هذه الأشياء، إن عُنيت بها، تستمر في الارتفاع — ببطء، بلا سقف، بلا قمة في الأفق

رياضياً، الموجة تُفسح المجال لشيء آخر كلياً: منحنى يصعد ويستمر في الصعود، لا يقترب من سقف محدد، يتراكم بهدوء في شيء لا يمكن قياسه في نقطة واحدة

و هذا يعيد ترتيب سلّم ما يستحق السعي إليه..

بعض الأشياء في الحياة لها شكل قمة فعلاً — المشاريع، والإنجازات، والتجارب. هذه تستحق العمل. التزم بالقوس الطويل، وراكم المساحة، وارتفع بقدر ما تُتيحه الرحلة. كل ذلك يظل صحيحاً

لكن الأشياء التي ليس لها قمة — الشغف، والفضول، والنمو، وعمق فهمك لنفسك — هذه في فئة مختلفة كلياً. هي ليست أشياء تسعى نحوها كموجة. هي أحوال تزرعها وترعاها، مستمرة، بلا خطوط نهاية. والعلامة على أنك تفعلها بشكل صحيح هي بالضبط أنك لا تستطيع الإشارة إلى أين توقفت

إن كنت تتعامل مع شغفك كمشروع له تاريخ انتهاء، تنتظر بلوغه القمة لتنتقل لغيره — فأنت تُطبّق النموذج الخطأ. وإن كنت تتعامل مع نموك الشخصي كمشروع له قمة — فأنت بدأت الانحدار بالفعل دون أن تدري

الموجة خريطة مفيدة لكثير من الحياة. لكن الأشياء التي تهم أكثر ليست على الموجة أصلاً

ما تسعى إليه فعلاً

هنا نصل إلى خلاصة الأمر

الحياة الحية ليست الحياة ذات القمم الأعلى. هي الحياة ذات المساحة الأوسع — أغنى وأعمق وأشمل تجربة للوجود هنا، فيها البناء والسير في مشاوير طويلة وصعبة

القمم مهمة. حقيقية. الوقوف على قمة شيء ما — محطة مهنية، اختراق إبداعي، مشروع أكتمل أخيراً — تجربة مختلفة فعلاً عن منتصف الصعود. لا تدع أحداً يقول لك إن القمم لا تحسب

لكن القمة لحظة. الصعود هو الحياة. وارتفاع القمة التي يمكنك الوصول إليها يتحدد بطول القوس الذي أنت مستعد للسير فيه

وفوق كل ذلك: تأكد أن أهم الأشياء في حياتك ليس لها قمة أصلاً. أن شغفك يزداد عمقاً. أن الفضول يظل يسحبك للاستكشاف. أن تستمر في النمو بطرق لا خط نهاية لها، ولا قمة تقف عليها، ولا لحظة تصل فيها وتقول انتهيت

الموجة نموذج فعال. لكن أفضل الأشياء في الحياة تكسر النموذج كلياً

تستمر فيها الحياة. بهدوء، وبشكل مستمر، بلا سقف

و هذا ما يجب ان تسعى إليه فعلاً

Let’s start with a question: what does your life look like if it’s a graph?

X-axis: time. Y-axis: something like aliveness — the felt quality of things, the sense of moving forward, the texture of being here. Now draw the line.

It doesn’t flatline. It doesn’t march steadily upward. It rises and falls, peaks and dips, surges and settles. It oscillates.

It looks, more or less, like a wave.

This is the sinusoid — the basic wave shape that shows up everywhere in nature. And it turns out to be a surprisingly useful lens for thinking about a life.

A sinusoid has a few parameters worth knowing:

Amplitude is the height of the wave — how far the peaks rise above the midline. In life terms, it’s the intensity of the highs and the volatility of the whole system. A high-amplitude life swings wide. In plain terms: how extreme your highs and lows are.

Period is the length of one full cycle — from peak, down through the trough, and back up to the next peak. Long period means slow, wide arcs. Short period means fast, tight cycles. In plain terms: how long each chapter of your life lasts.

Frequency is the inverse of period: how many cycles fit into a given stretch of time. High frequency means many rapid cycles. Low frequency means fewer, longer ones. In plain terms: how often your life changes gear.

These three parameters interact to produce the shape of the wave. And the shape of the wave, I want to argue, tells you a lot about the shape of a life.

But before we get into the parameters, there’s a prior question: what are we even trying to optimize for?

You’re measuring the wrong thing

Most of us, if we’re being honest, have been optimizing for peaks.

Get to the high point. Have the great experience. Reach the milestone. Hit the number. Stand on the summit. The peak is the thing. The rest is just transit.

This is understandable. Peaks are vivid. They’re memorable. They’re the things you tell stories about. They’re discrete and pointable-at in a way that the long middle stretches of life are not.

But here’s the problem with optimizing for peaks: they don’t last.

A peak, by definition, is a moment. You reach it, you register it, and then — almost immediately — you are no longer at it. The summit of a mountain is a few square meters. You stand there, you feel it, and then you either start descending or you freeze to death. There is no extended residence at the peak.

What lasts is everything else. The preparation. The ascent. The hard days mid-climb when you couldn’t see the top. The slow accumulation of ground covered. The people you were moving with. All of that — the entirety of the journey — is what actually constitutes the experience.

In wave terms: the peak is a single point on the curve. The journey is the area underneath it.

The goal, then, isn’t to maximize the height of the peak. It’s to maximize the richness, depth, and breadth of the area underneath the curve — the cumulative texture of the whole journey.

This is a different objective function. And it changes almost everything about how you approach the wave.

Mountains take time. That’s the point.

Now back to the parameters — because here’s where it gets interesting.

Imagine you want to climb a significant mountain. Not a hill. A real mountain — the kind that requires planning, training, gear, a team, months of preparation, weeks on the approach.

You have two options.

Option A: you give it a weekend. You drive to the trailhead one evening, start hiking next morning, push hard, and try to get as high as possible before you have to turn back end of weekend. You’ll reach something. Maybe it’ll even feel like a peak. But you will not be anywhere near the summit of a serious mountain on a weekend push.

Option B: you commit to the long arc. You train for a year. You study the route. You spend weeks at altitude acclimatizing. You accept that there will be setbacks, false summits, stretches of miserable weather where you’re not gaining ground. And eventually, maybe, you stand somewhere genuinely high.

The height you can reach is a direct function of the arc you’re willing to commit to.

This is true for mountains. It’s also true for almost everything worth doing.

A career of consequence takes decades to build — and the person who commits to that arc accumulates something the serial optimizer never does: depth, reputation, compounding expertise, a body of work that has internal coherence. The journey is the substance. The recognition, if it comes, is just the peak moment of something that was already rich underneath.

A deep friendship is a long-arc project. It can’t be hacked or accelerated. The thing that makes a 20-year friendship irreplaceable is the 20 years of shared context, accumulated trust, and lived history beneath it. The warmth you feel when you’re with that person is the area — built up, slowly, over the whole arc.

A creative practice that produces something genuinely new requires long, uncertain, often unrewarding stretches where you’re not sure you’re getting anywhere. The breakthrough, when it comes, is a peak. But the practice — the years of showing up — is what made the breakthrough possible. And it’s also, in itself, a life well spent.

The long arc isn’t the price you pay for the peak. The long arc is the point.

The problem with chasing peaks

Here’s what happens when you optimize for peaks directly — when you try to get to the high point as fast and as often as possible, without committing to the arc.

You get a spiky, high-frequency wave.

The spiky life has peaks — real ones, felt ones. But they’re shallow because the arcs feeding them are short. And the transitions are relentless: always cycling, always in flux, never long enough in any one mode to build something real. There’s a particular kind of restlessness that comes with this pattern — the sense that nothing ever quite settles, that you’re always moving toward or away from something, that the highs are getting harder to reach.

This isn’t a moral failure. It’s a structural one. You’re running a high-frequency wave through a life that was built for slower rhythms.

It’s also worth saying: life is more gradient and complex than a perfect mathematical wave. The troughs aren’t precise punishments for the highs. But volatility has its own costs — instability, shallow roots, a thinness to the accumulated experience. The person who has built nothing substantial in the arc has little to land on when the wave turns down.

Different things run at different speeds

There’s a practical wrinkle here, because your life isn’t one wave. It’s a bundle of waves — relationships, work, health, creative life, inner life — each running at its own natural frequency. And most of us are running several of them at the wrong speed.

Some things want to be high frequency. Daily exercise. A writing or creative practice. Small acts of connection and presence. These domains compound through repetition. High frequency is the mechanism.

Some things want to be low frequency. A career with real depth. A long marriage. A creative project that takes years to complete. A friendship that becomes part of your identity. These are slow-moving domains. They need long, uninterrupted arcs to develop into anything. Forcing them into a high-frequency loop — constantly reassessing, pivoting, optimizing — destroys what makes them valuable. You can’t grow a 20-year friendship at startup speed.

A significant source of modern anxiety, I think, comes from running slow-frequency things at high-frequency speeds. Reassessing your relationship every week. Rewriting your career plan every quarter. Asking “is this still meaningful?” about things that take years to reveal their meaning. You’re applying a high-frequency lens to a low-frequency signal. The result isn’t clarity — it’s noise.

Part of wisdom, maybe, is learning to match your review cadence to the natural frequency of the domain. Some things deserve daily attention. Others need to be left alone to develop — checked in on once a year, or less.

Some things don’t have a peak. Those are probably the ones that matter.

Here’s where the whole wave model starts to break down — and that breakdown might be one of the most important insights.

Everything we’ve discussed so far assumes that life’s meaningful arcs have a shape: they rise, they peak, they descend. The mountain has a summit. The project has a completion. The career has a crowning achievement. Even the wide, slow, area-maximizing wave is still a wave — it still oscillates, still cycles, still peaks and troughs.

But some things don’t work that way. Some things, if they’re going well, never peak at all.

Think about what it would mean for a passion to “peak.” You’d be saying: this is the best this will ever be, right now, at this moment — and from here it can only plateau or decline. That’s not a passion alive. That’s a passion finishing. The same is true of genuine curiosity. If your hunger to understand the world reaches a peak, it means you’ve stopped being curious. You’ve decided you know enough. The peak is the end. The peak is death.

Real learning doesn’t peak. Real growth doesn’t peak. A life examined with honesty doesn’t peak. These things, if tended properly, just keep going — rising slowly, without a ceiling, without a summit in sight.

In mathematical terms, the wave gives way to something else entirely: a curve that climbs and keeps climbing, approaching no particular top, compounding quietly into something that can’t be measured at a single point.

This matters because it reorders the hierarchy of what’s worth pursuing.

Some things in life are genuinely peak-shaped — projects, achievements, experiences. These are worth doing. Commit to the long arc, accumulate the area, reach as high as the journey allows. All of that still stands.

But the things that have no peak — curiosity, passions, growth, the deepening of your own understanding — these are in a different category entirely. They’re not things you pursue toward a destination. They’re conditions you cultivate, ongoing, without finish lines. And the sign that you’re doing them right is precisely that you can’t point to where they topped out.

If you’re keeping score on these, waiting for them to peak so you can call it complete — you’re applying the wrong model. If you’re treating your personal growth as a project with a summit — you’ve already started the descent without knowing it.

The wave is a useful map for much of life. But the things that matter most aren’t on the wave at all.

What you’re actually optimizing for

So here’s where this lands.

A good life is not a life with the highest peaks. It is a life with the largest area — the richest, widest, most accumulated experience of being here, moving through things, building something, loving people, doing hard work over long arcs.

The peaks matter. They’re real. Standing at the top of something — a career milestone, a creative breakthrough, a project finally complete — is a genuinely different experience from the middle of the climb. Don’t let anyone tell you the summits don’t count.

But the summit is a moment. The climb is the life. And the height of the summit you can reach is determined almost entirely by how long and committed an arc you’re willing to walk.

And then, above all of that: make sure the most important things in your life don’t have a summit at all. That your passions keep deepening. That curiosity keeps pulling. That you keep growing in ways that have no finish line, no peak to stand on, no moment where you arrive and declare it done.

The wave is a good model. But the best things in life break the model entirely.

They just keep going. Quietly, continuously, without ceiling.

That’s what you’re actually optimizing for.

قبل سنوات، تجاوزت الأربعين. تغيّر شيء ما في طريقة تفكيري، لم أستطع تسميته في البداية. كان أشبه بحكّة فلسفية متنامية يظهرعلى السطح في لحظات السكون ويطالب بإجابات

بدأت أطرح على نفسي أسئلة لم أطرحها من قبل. أسئلة غير “ما القادم؟ ماذا بعد الان؟” — هذي أسئلة رافقتني طوال حياتي. كانت الأسئلة هذي المرة مختلفة. أثقل. أكثر عمقا. أسئلة مثل: لماذا أعمل ما أعمله؟ ماذا أريد فعلاً؟ لو أعدت تصميم حياتي من الصفر، كيف سأختار؟

لماذا. وماذا. وكيف. بهذا الترتيب

جلست مع هذه الأسئلة فترة طويلة. قرأت. خضت محادثات طويلة مع أشخاص أثق بهم. وفي مكان ما في المشوار، بدأ إطار يتشكّل — طريقة لرؤية بنية الحياة جعلت تلك الاسئلة مفهومة نوعا ما. تحول المخاض إلى شيء يمكن التعامل معه

هذا المقال هو محاولتي لمشاركة ذلك الإطار. ليس خطة تطوير ذاتي. وليس قائمة أهداف. هو أقرب إلى خريطة — وحين تراها، ستفهم أين أنت الآن، ومن وين بدأت، وكم من الوقت أمامك لتبني شيئ… يعني لك شيئ

النافذة التي سوف أصفها حقيقية. ومحدودة. وهي مفتوحة لمن يرى نفسه فيها

أولاً، نرسم خريطة بسيطة لحياتك

يعيش الإنسان في المتوسط بين سبعين وثمانين سنة. بعضهم أقل، وبعضهم أكثر. لكن لو تأملت شكل أي حياة سترى نمط واضح بشكل لافت

الحياة، في جوهرها، أربع مراحل، كل مرحلة منها تقريباً عشرين سنة

لنسمّي كل مرحلة بما تستحق

“المرحلة الأولى (من ٠ إلى ٢٠): مرحلة “ما يجب فعله

لم تختر والديك، ولا بلدك، ولا لغتك، ولا دينك، ولا ظروفك الاجتماعية، ولا مدرستك الابتدائية، ولا أصدقاءك الأوائل، ولا الصدمات او التجارب التي مريت فيها، ولا المعتقدات الأساسية التي شكّلت نظرتك للعالم

كنت، بكل معنى الكلمة، راكب في سيارة ما تسوقها

شخص آخر ربط لك حزام الأمان. شخص آخر اختار الوجهة. ثم أنزلوك عند حافة الرشد وقالوا، بشكل أو بآخر: يلا، الآن دورك تقود

الاختيارات هذي لا تختفي عند بلوغ الثامنة عشر. بالعكس تتصلّب. اللغة التي تفكّر بها. القصص التي تؤمن فيها عن نفسك. مخاوفك و امالك. تعريف “النجاح” الذي تمّ تثبيته في داخلك قبل أن تكون لك كلمة فيه. كل ذلك يرافقك، أمتعة خفية لا تعرف حتى أنك تحملها

المرحلة الأولى هي الأساس. أساسات بنائية ما “صبيتها” بنفسك. لكنك جالس تبني عليها

“المرحلة الثانية (من ٢٠ إلى ٤٠): مرحلة “ما تحتاج فعله

الآن أنت من يقود، اسمياً على الأقل. مبروك! لكن فعليا؟ ليس بعد

لأن الاختيارات التي صُنعت في المرحلة الأولى هي “مسارات” قائمة تسير عليها المرحلة الثانية

تختار جامعة، لكن من قائمة شكّلتها درجات حصلت عليها في مدرسة لم تخترها. “تختار” مسار مهني، لكن في الغالب من الخيارات المتاحة لشخص مثلك، بخلفية كخلفيتك. “تختار” شريك لحياتك، لكن من خلال عدسة أنماط تشكّلت أغلب الظن قبل أن تتعلم المشي

المرحلة الثانية هي مرحلة الاحتياجات. ليس الاحتياجات بمفهوم ماسلو — وإن كان ذلك أيضاً — بل الاحتياجات بمعنى الإلتزامات الخارجية. تحتاج أن تبني نمط و سيرة معينة. تحتاج أن تُثبت نفسك — للمؤسسات، للشركاء، للأهل، لأصوات في رأسك صنعتها المرحلة الأولى

هناك سعادة كبيرة في المرحلة الثانية، لا تفهمني خطأ. كثيراً ما يقع الناس فيها في الحب، ويجدون أصحابهم و دائرتهم، ويكتشفون ما يتقنون، ويبنون شيء حقيقي. لكن الحقيقة الصادقة هي أن معظم الناس في المرحلة الثانية يُشغّلون برنامج لحياتهم كتبه شخص آخر أو المجتمع في معظمه

أنت تلعب “لعبة”. وبدأت للتو تتساءل اذا كنت تحبها

“المرحلة الثالثة (من ٤٠ إلى ٦٠): المرحلة الذهبية — “ما تريد فعله

هنا يبدا شيء يتغيّر

الحاجة إلى إثبات نفسك للاخر تبدأ في فقدان قبضتها عليك. المسار المهني وعوامل الحياة الأخرى تستقر — أو لا تستقر، لكن في كلا الحالتين رأيت ما يكفي لتعرف أنك قادر على الصمود. الأصوات الملحّة من المرحلتين الأولى والثانية تهدأ قليلاً

وفي ذلك المحيط، يظهر شيء جديد و تحويلي

هذه هي المرحلة الثالثة. وهي، بكل المقياس تقريباً، أكثر مراحل حياتك إثارة وأهمية

السبب؟ في المرحلة الثالثة، تمتلك للمرة الأولى المكوّنات الكاملة بشكل عالي أكثر من أي وقت

الخبرة. عشت ما يكفي لتفهم كيف تسير الأمور فعلاً — كيف يتصرف الناس حقاً، كيف تعمل المنظمات في الواقع، ما الذي يستطيع المال شراءه وما لا يستطيعه، كيف شكل الخسارة، وكيف شكل البناء، وتكلفة الخطأ في ما يهمّك

الموارد. ليس الأصول فقط بل الموارد بمعناها الأعمق: المهارات، والعلاقات، والمصداقية، والوضوح حول ما تجيده

الاستقلالية. القيود الخارجية للمرحلة الثانية تتراخى. باتت لديك سيطرة أكبر على وقتك، واختياراتك، واتجاهك أكثر من أي وقت مضى

الصحة. بلغت من العمر ما يكفي لتكون حكيماً نوعا ما، وما زلت في عمر يمكّنك جسدياً من فعل ما تريده تقريباً. هذه النافذة — حيث تتعايش الحكمة والحيوية معاً — ثمينة وأقصر مما تبدو عليه

اجمع هذه الأربعة معاً وستجد شيئاً نادراً: إنسان قادر، للمرة الأولى، على اتخاذ قرار حقيقي حر و مستقل نوعا ما بشأن كيفية يعيش حياته — وعنده فعلاً القدرة على التنفيذ

المرحلة الثالثة هي تقاطع القدرة والاستحقاق. حين يصبح سؤال “ماذا أريد فعلاً؟” قابلاً للإجابة وقابلاً للتنفيذ في آنٍ واحد

وهذا بالضبط يجعلها مثيرة ونوعا ما مربكة

لماذا تبدو المرحلة الذهبية كأزمة، وهي ليست كذلك

الحقيقة المزعجة عن هذي المرحلة حين تكتمل فجأة: انها محيّرة بعض الشيء

المرحلتان الأولى والثانية مريحة بطريقة غريبة. ليست دائماً. لكنهما منظّمة. هناك دائماً شيء تالٍ واضح نوعا ما. درجة تالية. ترقية تالية. محطة تالية. الطريق مرسوم. لا تحتاج أن تقرر إلى أين تذهب؛ تحتاج فقط أن تستمر في السير

المرحلة الثالثة تمزّق الخريطة

وأول ما يفعله معظم الناس اذا اختفت الخريطة هو التساؤل و الحيرة. يتركون أعمالهم “ليجدوا أنفسهم”.أو يهيمون بين مسارات مجهولة لا يعرفون إن كانوا يريدونها فعلاً. يفعلون أي شيء، أي شيء، ليستعيضوا عن الزخم الذي فقدوه فجأة

هذا ما تسمّيه الثقافة أزمة منتصف العمر. لكن هذا الإطار خاطئ. هي ليست أزمة. هي لحظة مواجهة

السؤال ليس “هل أخطأت بالوصول هنا؟” السؤال هو: الآن بعد أو صلت الى الاستطاعة أن أفعل ما أريد — ماذا أريد؟

هذا سؤال جوهري. كثير منا يصلون إليه حول الأربعين لا عند العشرين لأننا كنا في أول عشرين سنة من حياتنا مشغولين بالبقاء و السير أكثر من أن نتوقف ونسأله بجدية

مأساة السؤال الذي لم يُجب عليه

هنا تصبح الأمور صعبة نوعا ما

كثير من الناس لا يجيبون على هذه الاسئلة أبداً

يشعرون بمجيء و ثقل السؤال. يحسّون بالدعوة لاجابته. ثم — لأن السؤال صعب، ولأن الإجابة غير مؤكدة، ولأن تغيير المسار محفوف بالمخاطر وربما بشيء من الإحراج — يفعلون شيئاً أسهل بكثير

يمدّدون المرحلة الثانية

يستمرون في فعل ما يحتاجون فعله. أو ما يظنون أنهم يحتاجون فعله. أو ما يتوقعه منهم الآخرون. يبقون على المسارات القائمة حتى بعد أن تنقطع، لأن المسارات على الأقل تبدو وكأنها شيء ما.

ثم تأتي المرحلة الرابعة

المرحلة الرابعة (من ٦٠ إلى ٨٠): مرحلة الحصاد

المرحلة الرابعة هي حيث تحصد ما زرعته المراحل الثلاث السابقة

إن أعطتك المرحلة الأولى أساساً متيناً، وبنت المرحلة الثانية عليه شيئاً حقيقياً، وأتاحت لك المرحلة الثالثة أن تصحّح المسار وتضاعف الرهان على ما يهمّك فعلاً — فالمرحلة الرابعة يمكن أن تكون استثنائية. حصاد مثمر. الرضا العميق لحياة تبدو منطقية حين تتأملها. علاقات لها عمق لأنك استثمرت فيها. عمل له معنى لأنك اخترته. صحة تصمد لأنك اعتنيت بها. ذات داخلية تشعر أخيراً بأنها ذاتك

لكن إن أُهدرت المرحلة الثالثة — إن بقي السؤال دون إجابة، إن رُفضت الدعوة — تصبح المرحلة الرابعة شيئاً آخر. ليست بالضرورة تعيسة. لكنها خفيفة الوزن. نوع من الاستمرار في السير وسط ضباب يصفه كثير من الناس في أواخر الستينيات

الندم، في الغالب و بنهاية المطاف، ليس على ما فعلته. بل على ما لم تفعله حين كانت لديك الفرصة

المرحلة الثالثة هي تلك الفرصة

إذاً. ماذا تريد… فعلاً؟

عجز أو تردد معظم الناس عن الإجابة على “ماذا أريد؟” ليس بسبب أنهم لا يعرفون. بل لأنهم لم يمنحوا أنفسهم الإذن بالمعرفة

الإجابة في الغالب ليست مخفية. هي موجودة منذ فترة. هي الشيء الذي تفكّر فيه في رحلات الطيران الطويلة حين لا يراك أحد. هي الشيء الذي كنت تفعله قبل أن تصبح مشغولاً ومسؤولاً. هي الشيء الذي كنت ستفعله الآن لو لم تكن قلقاً على ما سيقوله الناس عنك

“السؤال ليس “ماذا أريد؟” السؤال هو: “هل أنا مستعد لأخذ ذلك بجدية؟

لأن المرحلة الثالثة لا تدوم إلى الأبد. لا شيء يدوم

إن كتب الله لك، ستحصل على قرابة عشرين سنة في المرحلة الذهبية. عقدين من ذروة كل شيء — الخبرة، والاستقلالية، والصحة، والموارد، والحرية. عقدين لبناء الحياة التي كنت ستبنيها لو كنت تعرف في العشرين ما تعرفه الآن

عشرين سنة تبدو كثيرة. لكنها ابدا ليست كذلك و ستمر بسرعة. اسأل أي شخص في المرحلة الرابعة

الإذن الذي لم تعرف أنك تحتاجه

ما توصّلت إليه بعد أن جلست مع هذه الأسئلة طويلاً بما يكفي

لحظة المواجهة في منتصف العمر ليست أزمة. هي حياتك تطلب منك أخيراً أن تكون حاضرا بوعي فيها

لمدة عشرين سنة، فعلت ما يجب. ولعشرين سنة فعلت ما تحتاج. والآن، للمرة الأولى، يمكن لك أن تفعل ما تريد — ما تريده فعلاً، كإنسان بلغ أشده وعنده معرفة حقيقية بنفسه وبالعالم

هذه ليست مشكلة أو أزمة بحاجة تحلّ. هذه هدية تُفتح

افتحها. ليس العام القادم. وليس بعد أن يكبر الأولاد. وليس حين تهدأ الأمور. (الأمور لا تهدأ. الأمور لا تهدأ أبداً. انتظار الهدوء هو أحد أعظم أساليب العقل البشري في تسويف الحياة.)

الآن. اطرح السؤال الآن. اجلس معه. خذه بجدية. دعه يكون صعباً. دعه يفاجئك

أمضيت عشرين عمرك الأول وأنت تُشكَّل بقوى خارجة عن إرادتك. وأمضيت عشريناتك التالية تبني شيئاً تحت ثقل الالتزام و الاحتياجات. لقد استحققت — ولديك الآن النافذة — لتفعل شيئاً ما مختلف تماماً

المرحلة الذهبية لك لأن تخوضها أنت.. السؤال الوحيد هو ماذا ستبني فيها؟

A few years ago, I crossed 40. Something shifted in my thinking that I couldn’t quite name. It was more like a growing itch — a philosophical restlessness — that kept surfacing in quiet moments and demanding attention.

I started asking myself a set of questions I’d never really asked before. Not “what’s next?” — I’ve been asking that my whole life. These were different. Bigger. More uncomfortable. Things like: Why am I doing what I’m doing? What do I actually want? If I could redesign things from scratch, what would I do?

The why. The what. The how. In that order.

I sat with those questions for a while. I read things. I had long conversations with people I trust. And somewhere in that process, a framework started to take shape — a way of looking at the architecture of a human life that made the restlessness make sense. That turned the itch into something I could work with.

This post is my attempt to share that framework. It’s not a self-help plan. It’s not a bucket list. It’s more like a map — a map that, once you see it, might hopefully change the way you understand where you are, where you’ve been, and how much time you have left to do something meaningful with what you know.

The window I’m going to describe is real, it’s finite, and it’s open for those of you who might relate.

First, Let’s Draw a Simple Map of Your Life

Humans live, on average, somewhere between 70 and 80 years. Some less, some more. But if you squint at the shape of a life — any life — a weirdly clean pattern emerges.

Life, it turns out, comes in four blocks of roughly twenty years each.

Block 1 is the foundation. You didn’t pour it. But you’re building on it.

Block 2 (Ages 20–40): The “Need To Do” Block

Now you’re nominally in charge. Except — you’re not really. Not yet.

Because the choices made in Block 1 create the rails that Block 2 runs on.

You “choose” a university, but from a list shaped by grades you got in a school you didn’t choose, You “choose” a career, but mostly from options that were available to someone like you, with a background like yours. You “choose” a partner, but through the lens of attachment patterns probably formed before you could walk.

Block 2 is the needs block. Not needs as in Maslow’s hierarchy (though that too), but needs in the sense of external compulsion. You need to build credentials. You need to prove yourself — to employers, to partners, to parents, to voices in your head that got shaped by Block 1.

There’s plenty of joy in Block 2. It’s often where people fall in love, find their people, discover what they’re good at, build something real. But the honest truth is that most people in Block 2 are running a program that was largely written by someone else.

You’re playing a game. You’re just starting to wonder if you like the game.

Block 3 (Ages 40–60): The Golden “Want To Do” Block

And then something shifts.

The need to prove yourself starts losing its grip. Career and other life factors stabilize— or not, but either way, you've seen enough to know you can survive. The urgent voices from Block 1 and Block 2 get a little quieter.

And in that quiet, something new and unsettling appears:

This is Block 3. And it is, by almost any measure, the most interesting and important block of your life.

Here’s why. In Block 3, for the first time, you have the full stack:

Experience. You've lived enough to know how things actually work — how people really behave, how organizations actually function, what money can and can't buy, what it feels like to lose something, to build something, to be wrong about something important.

Resources. Not only assets, but resources in the deeper sense: skills, relationships, credibility, clarity about what you're good at.

Autonomy. The external constraints of Block 2 are loosening. You have more say over your time, your choices, your direction than you've ever had.

Health. You're old enough to be wise and young enough to still be physically capable of doing almost anything. This window — where wisdom and vitality coexist — is precious and shorter than it looks.

Put those together and you get something rare: a human being who is, for the first time, capable of making a truly free choice about how to live — and who actually has the capacity to execute on it.

Block 3 is the intersection of can and should get to. It’s when the question “what do I actually want?” becomes both answerable and actionable.

Which is exactly what makes it so disorienting.

Why the Golden Block Feels Like a Crisis (And Isn’t)

Here’s the thing about suddenly having freedom: it’s kind of confusing.

Block 1 and Block 2 are, in a weird way, comfortable. Not always pleasant. But structured. There’s always a next thing. A next grade, a next promotion, a next milestone. The path is marked. You don’t have to decide where to go; you just have to keep moving.

Block 3 rips up the map.

And the first thing most people do when the map disappears is panic. They quit their job to “find themselves”. They obsessively think of pursuing new unknown paths. They do something, anything, to replace the forward motion they’ve suddenly lost.

This is what the culture calls a midlife crisis. But that’s the wrong frame. It’s not a crisis. It’s a reckoning.

The question isn’t “what went wrong?” The question is: “Now that I can finally do what I want — what do I want?”

That’s an most important question to ask. Many of us just happen to reach it at 40 instead of 20 because for the first twenty years of your adult life, you were too busy surviving to stop and ask it seriously.

The Tragedy of the Unanswered Question

A lot of people never actually answer it.

Block 4 (Ages 60–80): The Harvest Block

Block 4 is where you reap what the first three blocks sowed.

If Block 1 gave you a solid foundation, Block 2 built something real on it, and Block 3 allowed you to course-correct and double down on what actually mattered — Block 4 can be extraordinary. A harvest. The deep satisfaction of a life that, on reflection, makes sense. Relationships that have depth because you invested in them. Work that has meaning because you chose it. Health that holds because you took care of it. A self that feels, finally, like yours.

But if Block 3 was wasted — if the question went unanswered, if the invitation was declined — Block 4 becomes something else. Not necessarily miserable. But thin. A kind of going-through-the-motions that a lot of people in their late 60s describe, usually quietly, usually only to their most trusted friends.

Regret, it turns out, is mostly not about the things you did. It’s about the things you didn’t do when you had the chance.

Block 3 is the chance.

So. What Do You Actually Want?

I will say this: the reason most people can’t answer “what do I want?” isn’t that they don’t know. It’s that they haven’t given themselves permission to know.

The answer usually isn’t hidden. It’s been there for a while. It’s the thing you think about on long flights when nobody’s watching. It’s the thing you used to do before you got too busy and responsible to do it. It’s the thing you’d be doing right now if you weren’t so worried about what people would think.

The question isn’t “what do I want?” The question is: “Am I willing to take that seriously?”

Because Block 3 doesn’t last forever. No block does.

You get, if you’re lucky, twenty years in the Golden Block. Two decades of peak everything — experience, agency, health, resources, autonomy. Two decades to actually build the life you would have built if you’d known, at 20, what you know now.

Twenty years sounds like a lot. It isn’t. Ask anyone in Block 4.

The Permission Slip You Didn’t Know You Needed

Here’s what I’ve come to believe, having sat with these questions long enough.

The midlife reckoning isn’t a crisis. It’s your life finally asking you to show up for it.

For twenty years you did what you must. For twenty years you did what you needed. And now, for the first time, you get to do what you want — what you actually want, as a fully formed human being with real knowledge of yourself and the world.

That is not a problem to be solved. That is a gift to be opened.

So open it. Not next year. Not after the kids leave home. Not once things calm down. (Things don’t calm down. Things never calm down. Waiting for calm is one of the great diversionary tactics of the human mind.)

Now. Ask the question now. Sit with it. Take it seriously. Let it be hard. Let the answer surprise you.

You spent your first twenty years being shaped by forces outside your control. You spent your next twenty years building something under the weight of need and obligation. You’ve earned the right — and you now have the window — to do something entirely different.

The Golden Block is yours.

Output rises in the national accounts. But the output is increasingly generated by machines that don’t pay rent, buy groceries, or take vacations: Ghost GDP — growth that circulates through corporate balance sheets but never reaches households. The consumer economy, which drives roughly 70% of GDP in most developed markets, slowly hollows out. A feedback loop with no natural brake: AI capability improves, companies replace workers, displaced workers spend less, businesses invest more in AI to protect margins, AI improves further.

It is a serious scenario, not hyperbole. Saudi Arabia holds the world’s second-largest proven oil reserves, operates one of the lowest cost-per-barrel production systems on earth, and receives among the highest solar irradiance of any country globally — across vast, uninhabited land available for utility-scale deployment. This is not a country that owns oil. It is a country that owns energy — legacy form and future form simultaneously. In both the bull and bear AI scenarios, that position doesn’t weaken. It strengthens with every cycle of the spiral. And crucially, unlike during the industrial age, the global economy is now arranged in a way that lets Saudi capture the value that position creates.

But Wait — Saudi Had Energy During the Industrial Age Too

This is a valid push back, and it deserves a direct answer.

Saudi Arabia fueled the factories of Europe, the cars of America, the growth of Asia — and captured a relatively thin slice of the enormous wealth those economies created. If energy was so valuable then, why didn’t Saudi capture more? And what makes now any different?

It is the right question. Four structural dynamics have changed in ways that together amount to a fundamentally different game.

Then — Why energy wealth didn’t translate

Energy was an input. Saudi sold oil. Buyers burned it to run factories and make things. The value — engineering, manufacturing, finance — accrued to the maker, not the fuel supplier. Energy was one step removed from where the margin lived.

The ladder was too tall. Climbing from commodity supplier to value creator required generations of accumulated industrial knowledge. The barriers were real, high, and slow to cross.

Capital productivity had limits. Petrodollars could buy bonds and real estate. They couldn’t meaningfully buy into the value chains being built in Germany or Japan.

Now — Why it’s structurally different

Energy is now infrastructure. Data centers don’t consume energy to make something else — they are the product. Owning the energy that runs AI is closer to owning the factory than fueling someone else’s. Supplier and value creator are converging.

AI lowers the ladder. You no longer need 40 years of institutional knowledge to build a productive operation. AI compresses that learning. Capital plus energy plus AI equals productive capacity that previously took decades to assemble.

Saudi Arabia is India’s structural inverse. Its value proposition is not cheap human intelligence. It is cheap energy — the scarce physical input that the intelligence layer runs on. The more abundant intelligence becomes, the more valuable the substrate beneath it gets.

Eight Years of Evidence Few Are Crediting

The most underappreciated argument about Saudi Arabia’s future is not about energy or AI. It is about velocity. The last eight years are not just a story of what got built — they are proof that this country can compress time.

Capital markets reform. Female workforce activation at scale. An entertainment sector built from zero to live in under a decade. Regulatory modernization that typically takes a generation of political will. A digital backbone. An SME ecosystem. Each of these individually represents a decade of work in a normal development context. Saudi ran them simultaneously, in eight years, against oil price volatility, a global pandemic, and a cultural transformation of enormous complexity.

You can debate the quality of execution — there are legitimate debates to have. But the velocity itself is a data point that deserves to be taken seriously. It is not a credential. It is a proof of concept.

The strategic logic available to Saudi Arabia right now is one of the most elegant in modern economic history. Technology — AI models, automation, manufacturing systems — will follow the same commoditization arc that every technology follows. Expensive first, then accessible, then nearly free. We are in the expensive first phase. Which means Saudi can deploy AI-driven productivity tools today and watch the cost of those tools fall over the coming decade while compounding the gains from early deployment. Meanwhile, it holds the assets that power all of it.

The key insight: When the cost of intelligence collapses to the cost of running compute, energy becomes the last scarce input in the chain. The economies that own compute hardware outperform. The economy that owns the energy powering all of it occupies an even more fundamental position.

The Asymmetric Long — In Plain Terms

• Hold the complete energy stack. Hydrocarbons and solar, at world scale. In bull and bear AI scenarios alike, every cycle of the intelligence economy demands more power. Saudi collects that toll regardless of which way the broader economy spins.

• Buy cheap technology now. AI tools are in their expensive first wave. Deploy them aggressively to compress decades of productivity growth into a 10-year window — then watch the cost fall as the gains from early deployment compound.

• Buy into the intelligence layer. Synergistic capital can take equity stakes in AI companies, chip manufacturers, and data infrastructure while those assets are still contested.

• Collect rent on both sides. As a productivity beneficiary of cheap AI, and as an indispensable energy supplier to the infrastructure stack that the entire global economy is now dependent on. This dual position is one almost no other country can occupy.

The Moment Most People Miss

There is a pattern in economic emergence consistent enough to be taken seriously. In the early stages, critics have real points — execution gaps, institutional weaknesses, transitions harder than slide decks suggest. The optimists look naive. Then evidence accumulates past a tipping point, consensus shifts, and the early position becomes obvious in retrospect.

The investor who understood South Korea in 1975, Singapore in 1980, the UAE in 1995, or China in 2000 — before those stories were consensus — captured returns unavailable to those who waited for certainty. Certainty, by definition, is priced in.

Saudi Arabia in 2025 has more in common with those moments than the current narrative admits. A government with genuine long-term commitment. Sovereign capital that doesn’t answer to quarterly earnings calls. A young population with rising expectations. A complete energy stack growing more strategically valuable as AI deepens. A proven capacity to compress economic time. And — for the first time in its modern history — a global structure that lets Saudi climb from energy supplier to value captor.

The interesting question is not whether the AI boom continues. The question is not whether Saudi Arabia will be a major diversified economy by mid-century. It is whether you understand that before it becomes consensus — or after.
